Charles LOYEUX (1823-1898). Presumed self-portrait of the artist dedicated to his son Georges, November 1896. Oil on mahogany panel signed, dated and dedicated on the right. 41 x 32.5 cm. Biography: A student of Paul Delaroche at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, Charles Loyeux was a friend of Jean-Léon Gérôme, Adolphe Yvon and Armand Félix Marie Jobbé-Duval. He made his debut at the Salon in 1842.
A realistic painter of portraits, genre scenes, nudes and still lifes, Jules Verne wrote of him at the 1857 Salon: "M. Charles Loyeux must be cited with praise for his painting representing Charles II, Duke of Lorraine, caressing dogs [...]". He also decorated the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Port church in Nantes.
