Gouro pulley
Ivory Coast
Wood
H. 14 cm
Superb Gouro loom pulley featuring a stylized human face. Delineated by dotted lines, the sugarloaf-shaped headdress is adorned with vertical engravings. A thick braid appears at the front and is folded to the side. The strongly rounded forehead overhangs half-closed eyes, a short, blunt nose and a half-open mouth. Magnificent patina attesting to prolonged use.
This pulley can be traced back to the workshop of the Duonou Master. A mask in Stuttgart's Linden-Museum is surmounted by a figure whose head is very similar in style to the pulley studied here (see Les Maîtres de la sculpture de Côte d'Ivoire, 2015, fig. 54).
