Two phoenixes, China, early 18th century
Rare broken-type ivory fan pierced with a semiset of stars and painted on both sides with two phoenixes (fenghuang 凤凰) with outstretched wings, flying among peonies. The painted plumes of a Ruy scepter. The phoenix is the symbol of the Empress of China, while the dragon is that of the Emperor.
The head is enhanced by a brown tortoiseshell plate.

N.B.: This fan is similar to fan no. 4 in the exhibition "Made in China. Chinese export fans from the Edrina collection at the Fan Museum", London, 2015. Also a fan in the collections of the British Museum, London (inv. 2018.3005.510). A very similar fan belonged to the Michel Maignan collection.
