Like Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) and Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891), Emilio Vasarri became a specialist in depicting Greco-Roman episodes from antiquity. The work we present illustrates the chained slave Samson, condemned to turn a millstone (Judges, 16:1).
For this work, Vasarri was awarded first prize at the Florence Academy
and a bronze medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
