CORROZET (Gilles): Hecatongraphie, c'est-à-dire les descriptions de cent figures et histoires contenant plusieurs apophtègmes, proverbes et sentances...Janot, 1543. In-8 contemporary vellum (restored, light dampening, the upper margins of the last leaves show paper losses with damage to the upper parts of the woodcuts, the last ff. of text and the ff. of privileges show larger losses, and have been restored, the margins of the title page and 1st ff. restored). one of the most ravishing illustrated books of the 16th century. It is adorned with 100 very fine line engravings, true masterpieces, attributed to Jean Cousin by Viollet le Duc, but which, according to Fairfax Murray (II, 640), are probably by an artist with the monogram F working for Denis Janot... The plates are composed of an engraving and a text, all framed with arabesques in Renaissance style; opposite these illustrations is an explanatory text in verse by Gilles Corrozet. Third edition, which according to Brunet is more beautiful than the first of 1540. Handwritten bookplate Henry White 1720.
