China for Vietnam, 19th century.

This very rare example of sovereignist porcelain is a singular testimony to the period of Vietnamese resistance to French invasion and Chinese influence. The eagle symbolizing Vietnam is depicted contemplating the sea in an attitude of domination designed to assert the Emperor's authority and power over his territory, which was prey to foreign incursions.
