Very rare Hué blue-white porcelain dish decorated with an eagle looking out to sea under a pine tree, the main scene accompanied on the left by a calligraphic poem. Underglaze blue four-character mark under the base "Tu Duc Tan Mui" literally "The Xinwei year of Tu Duc's reign" corresponding to the year 1871. China for Vietnam, 19th century. Diameter: 14.5 cm. This very rare example of sovereignist porcelain is a singular testimony to the period of Vietnamese resistance to French invasion and Chinese influence. The eagle symbolizing Vietnam is depicted contemplating the sea in an attitude of domination designed to assert the Emperor's authority and power over his territory, which was prey to foreign incursions.
