During the New Year period, post offices were inundated with business cards in envelopes, followed in the early 20th century by greeting postcards.
To cope with this huge seasonal and exceptional workload, users were asked to hand in their items well in advance, particularly for bulk mailings, so that the post office could process them to the best of its staff's available time.
