Guéré mask Ivory Coast
Here, the forehead protrudes like a visor, contrasting with the globular, hooked volumes in the center of the face.
Horn-like projections meet on the forehead and under the nose, while a narrow incision forms the mouth.
Indigo and red ochre highlights, and kaolin on the eyes, enhance the mottled matte patina.
If this mask has a social function, as when it is required by the chief to order certain work, it may also be intended to entertain the villagers.
32 x 15 cm
Sold without base
The African Guéré mask is reputed to be a complex piece, both in terms of form and, often, material. Here, it is devoid of accessories. Prior to the 1960s, masks, the creation of which was inspired by visits from spirits during dreams, accompanied most activities such as warfare, dancing, singing and hunting. Each mask bore a name associated with its function. They remained the property of the dancer's lineage. The Guéré are an ethnic group from a forest region along the western border of Côte d'Ivoire. They are part of a larger Wé tribe that also includes the Wobé, with whom the Guéré share many customs and beliefs.
