Yoruba statuette, Ibeji era, Nigeria Testifying to the great diversity of twin sculptures made according to the Ifa's indications transmitted to the diviner, the babalawo, this polychrome statuette acted as a substitute for the death of the child. Slight surface chips and old restoration 19 x 8 cm This ibedji is treated in the same way as the missing child. It's the mother who has to take care of it; she can wash and feed it regularly. If she dies, the remaining twin takes over. Considered as much more than a physical representation of a loved one, the ibedji influences the life of the family, which is why they continue to offer it prayers, worship and libations. These pieces are among the best-known art objects of the Yoruba ethnic group. In fact, this ethnic group has a higher incidence of twins than any other in Black Africa. This particularity has naturally influenced and integrated their statuary.
