Although the cartonnier of the central subject is unknown, the grotesques on a red background
red background are undoubtedly inspired by cartoons by Giulio ROMANO (1499-1546) or Perino Del
GAVA (1501-1547). At the end of the 15th century, following the discovery of the buried remains of the Domus Aureo
Aureo (Golden House) of the Emperor Nero, similar motifs were found in these "grottoes", and given the name Grotesque.
the name of Grotesques with small figures. During the Renaissance, these decorations became so popular
such a success that they were the subject of multiple versions. Our panel features a remarkable border
exotic fruits and flowers, dotted here and there with animals and fantastical characters, and on either side of
a cardinal's hat in a medallion. And at the top center, representing God, a triangle with the
the gaze of the divine eye.
Biblical and Christian sources:
Paul's epistles criticize the Old Testament for reducing Abraham's role to that of a genealogical father,
Paul makes him the "father of faith". He is regarded as a patriarch of the Old Testament
He is considered an Old Testament patriarch, the prototype of the highest degree of Old Testament and New Testament piety. According to John
Chrysostom, Abraham is the protector and master of his people, surrounded by pagans. Augustine of Hippo,
writes in The City of God that God's promise to Abraham to multiply his descendants
and blessing extends to every man upon whom the divine blessing descends. When Abraham is blessed
after the wine and bread have been brought to the high priest Melchisedec, Christians, following the Fathers of the Church
Church Fathers see this as a foreshadowing of the Eucharist. Abraham's prostration at Mambre before the three angels
is an episode particularly meditated upon by the Eastern Churches, whether Orthodox or not. Gregory of Nyssa, in his
his On the Divinity of the Son and the Spirit and the Praise of Abraham the Just, considers the angel at the moment of Isaac's
sacrifice is a manifestation of the Trinity. Traditionally, Isaac's sacrifice was received by early
Christianity as an announcement of Jesus' sacrifice. John Chrysostom praises Abraham's courage
of Abraham.
The Eastern Church celebrates the memory of Abraham twice: on October 9 with his nephew Lot, and on the
second Sunday before Christmas. The Roman martyrology also celebrates Abraham on October 9.
