Portrait of Marshal de Castelnau ( 1620 - 1658) in armor
Oval canvas, Louis XIV period, gilded wood frame with daisy motif
Height: 73 cm Width: 60 cm
Old restorations
Note: Marshal de Castelnau was, with Turenne, the chief of operations at the Battle of the Dunes at Dunkirk (Leffrinckoucke) in 1658. He was wounded in Dunkirk by a Spanish musket, a wound that earned him the title of Marshal from Louis XIV, but also his untimely death.
Our portrait can be compared with the engraving of the same subject from Les personnages illustres du "Grand Siècle "engravings between 1652 and 1660 by Pierre Daret (1610 - 1675), available at: https://www.traces-h.net/daret-gravure-1654.htm
