Ɵ Street Trades in China. Album illustrated with 40 original photographs mounted under passepartout and captioned in white gouache, 1890-1895 (19 x 15 cm).
Art Nouveau binding in brown cloth boards, titled "Sunny Memories".
Precious little documentary and humorous photographic album on life in a country then largely inaccessible to foreigners, at the end of the 19th century.
From moneychangers to cobblers, water carriers to bird sellers, fortune-tellers to acrobats, and Chinese wheelbarrows to rickshaws and caravans, this album provides an invaluable panorama of rural and urban life in late 19th-century China. It was brought back from an expedition to this still very closed country by a relative of Henri Laugier, future deputy secretary-general for cultural affairs at the United Nations and a great collector of modern art.
Provenance: Henri Laugier.
