Autograph letter signed to Éva Gonzalès, referring to an autograph letter signed from Zacharie Astruc to Manet (enclosed). Circa 1870. 2 pages in-8°, with a letter from Zacharie Astruc (2 pages in-16°) to Manet forwarded to Eva Gonzalès. Devauchelle folder.
Interesting correspondence from Manet to his pupil Eva Gonzalès, in which Zacharie Astruc, who was posing for La Leçon de musique at Manet's home at the time, is quoted tartly, causing him to move his study sessions.
Manet asks Éva Gonzalès to reschedule her visit to his studio (Éva Gonzalès, 1849-1883, was Manet's only pupil), due to an unforeseen circumstance imposed on her by Zacharie Astruc. By way of explanation, Manet encloses an autograph letter signed by Zacharie Astruc to himself (citing Fantin-Latour, Barbey d'Aurevilly and Éva Gonzalès, among others), requesting the rescheduling of a posing session at Manet's studio for his portrait in La Leçon de musique (here confirming that it was indeed Astruc who posed for this Manet painting), due to the arrival of Barbey d'Aurevilly for his bust in progress by Astruc. Manet complains of Astruc's rudeness, forcing him not to receive his pupil as agreed.
Provenance: Édouard Manet; Éva Gonzalès.
