GUICHENON (Samuel). With the foundations of abbeys, priories, chartreuses and collegiate churches, origins of chasteaux, seigneuries and principal fiefs and genealogies of all noble families. Divided into four parts. A Lyon, chez Antoine Huguetan et Marc-Ant. Ravaud, 1650, in-folio, brown calf, ornate ribbed spine, double gilt fillet on covers (period binding).
First and only published edition.
It includes a signed letter from Samuel Guichenon to Messieurs de Ste Marthe, whose bookplate appears on the flyleaf, as well as two handwritten bookplates on the title page.
The de Sainte-Marthe family, originally from Poitou, was famous for its literary and historical achievements. Guichenon's contemporary was Pierre-Gaucher de Sainte-Marthe (1618-1690), also a historian and genealogist, who published numerous works.
Signed consignments from the 17th century are extremely rare.
The work subsequently passed into the great Chandon de Briailles collection (ex-libris).
A large engraved allegorical vignette on the title page showing Ptolemy and Euclid surrounding a sphere in a baroque setting, and numerous burin-engraved coats of arms in the text.
Spine a little darkened, some spotting on boards.
