Pair of carved, polychromed and gilded walnut groups depicting Christ before Pilate and the Carrying of the Cross. The first group features five figures, with Pilate, bearded and wearing a high headdress with raised brim, Christ at his side, hands bound, and three executioners, one of whom wears a conical cap. The second shows Christ, his legs bent under the weight of the cross, surrounded by two executioners with grim faces, Simon of Cyrene coming to relieve Jesus by supporting his load. Brabant, Brussels, circa 1460/70 Christ before Pilate: H. 49 cm - W. 25 cm - D. 18 cm Carrying the cross: H. 44 cm - W. 24 cm - D. 15 cm Modern wax stamps on the back (missing and restored, worm-eaten parts). These two groups from the same altarpiece have many points in common with four Passion scenes in the Musée Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire de Bruxelles, in terms of the positions of the figures, particularly in the Carrying of the Cross (fig.), their physiognomies, costumes and headgear (inv. 866 to 869).
