As early as 1902, Louis Charvat, who lived near Hauterives, published the first portraits of the letter carrier and postcards of the Palais Idéal. Cheval soon realized that this practice infringed his copyright, and decided to take Charvat to court. Charvat gave up his business and was forced to destroy the original prints.
