Delacroix's uncle, Nicolas Bataille, owned a property in Valmont, near Fécamp in Normandy. Delacroix loved to go there, staying nine times between 1813 and 1850. It was also here that he produced numerous sketches and watercolors of the coast and surrounding area. Here, the flat tints of color are deliberately light, as this is probably a sketch made during one of his walks.
