Our drawing is a preparatory sketch for the drapery of one of the two young women found at the center of the composition of one of the designs for L'Enrôlement des volontaires of 1792 (preserved at the Michele and Donald d'Amour Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield).
Also known as "Les Promises", they embody optimism for the future of society at the start of the Second Republic. Thomas Couture produced several studies of these two women (Cf. Sotheby's New York, lot 10, Oct. 22, 2019).
