Watchmaker Charles Oudin, a pupil of Breguet, specialized in mourning watches, which were fashionable in the mid-19th century and often mounted as chatelaines, personalized with the initials or coat-of-arms of the deceased. Mourning watches by Charles Oudin can be found in French museum collections and in the British Museum.
Mourning watch, châtelaine in blackened metal and black leather with key. Round metal case covered with black plating. Case back decorated with a coat of arms. White dial, baton hour markers and black Roman numerals. Hand-wound mechanical movement signed and numbered n°1737. The pocket watch is attached to a black chain and a leather, plating and metal chatelaine.
