Porcelain vase The short-necked, tubular "rouleau" body features elegant polychrome enamel decoration on a white background depicting a scholar, accompanied by his attendants and a child, in a wooded landscape. Height: 36 cm Diameter: 16 cm Provenance: Paul-Emile Naggiar (1883-1961) was a French diplomat who served in China during his career. He was first deputy French consul in Shanghai in 1912, then French consul in Shanghai from 1915 to 1917, and consul general in 1926. He was appointed French Ambassador to China in 1936, a post he held until 1938. During his stays in China, he was able to purchase numerous works of art, which were passed down through his family.
