Annotated lower left "A l'arc de Constantin" and initials of David's sons lower right.
On verso of old mount, inscription by Charles Saunié with his stamp at bottom right "Drawing from the time of his stay in Rome, the inscription on the left is in his hand, the two initials, J.D and E.D are those of his sons Jules and Eugène who initialed all their father's drawings, sketches and Album pages at the 1826 sale".

This drawing corresponds to a study by David based on a figure from a relief of the Arch of Constantine, hitherto known from a tracing in the Cahors album (cf.P. Rosenberg and L.A. Prat, "Jacques Louis David, Catalogue Raisonné des dessins" tome II, Milan 2002, Ed.Léonardo Arte, n°86, p. 838)
