PRECIOUS RELIQUE that belonged to MADAME ÉLISABETH, PRINCESSE DE FRANCE (1764-1794).
Fragment of fabric from a dress worn by King Louis XVI's sister on the day of her death, as indicated in the accompanying handwritten note.
Piece in green moiré silk taffeta alternating with strips of silk woven in shades of blue, preserved in a period gilded wood frame, with a pencil drawing enhanced with watercolor representing a presumed portrait of the princess seen in profile and an envelope bearing the handwritten inscription: "Morceau de la robe de Madame Élisabeth le jour où elle fut décapitée" (Piece of Madame Élisabeth's dress on the day she was beheaded), on the reverse of the envelope appears a red wax seal.
