Arkoun Mohamed, Guellouz Ezzedine, Frikha Abdelaziz, Sud éditions, Tunis, 1977
In-4, hardback. 250 color photographs.
This handsome book is innovative in that it is the viewpoint of three Muslims on the pilgrimage to Mecca. Not only rich in photographs by Abdelaziz Frikha, it is also written by Mohamed Arkoun and Ezzedine Guellouz, Arkoun emphasizing the religious dimension of the pilgrimage and Guellouz the historical dimension.
The iconography, a veritable photo-reportage, plunges us into the collective fervor experienced by pilgrims, earning the artist an international reputation. First prize at the Frankfurt Fair in 1978, on its release. Thanks to its success, the Saudi authorities commissioned a 2nd edition.
