Nicolas Poussin (Les Andelys 1594 - Rome 1665) circle of Autumn and Winter Pair of oil on panel 18.5 x 24 cm From a bourgeois family, he left the family home at the age of eighteen to learn the craft of painting in Paris. After a few years, in 1624, he came to Rome where, thanks to his high culture, he quickly entered the most important cultural circles. After much insistence in 1640 he returned to his homeland, where he was received with great honors by Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu, who offered him the direction of the Louvre works and the appointment as the king's first painter. Due to various conspiracies by French artists at court, he decided to return to Rome in 1642. In the Urbe he found peace from his mournful life and the opportunity to work for more than 20 years, building his reputation as one of the most important painters of all time. In France he formed a circle of important artistic personalities influenced by his style, among them: Sébastien Bourdon, Nicolas Colombel, Laurent de La Hyre, Charles Le Brun, Eustache Le Sueur, Nicolas-Pierre Loir, Francisque Millet, and Jacques Stella.
