Carlo Maratta or Maratti (Camerano 1625 - Rome 1713) pupil/cerchia di The virgin crowns St. Peter bishop of Rome Oil on canvas 70 x 52 cm Alessandro Agresti, who edited the monograph Carlo Maratti Eredità ed evoluzioni del classicismo romano, describes with exemplary clarity and synthesis the importance of the painter: "Carlo Maratti, tutelary deity of the art of the eighteenth century in Rome, inventor of sacred and profane images that marked the course of painting up to the mature Neoclassicism..." Indeed, from the late seventeenth century to the entire following century, painting in Rome and beyond looked to the master from the Marche region. Very important painters belonged to his circle or were his pupils, such as: Agostino Masucci, Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari, Luigi Garzi, Giuseppe Passeri, Giacinto Calandrucci, Francesco Mancini, Marco Benafial and Sebastiano Conca.
