Venetian school of the 17th century
Hercules and the Nemean Lion
Oil on canvas
61 x 79.5 cm
Provenance: noble Venetian Collection.
The work is based on a Rubens painting preserved in Bucharest. In turn it is an interpretation of an engraving by Giuseppe Niccolò Vicentino. This graphic work, like the similar one by Ugo da Carpi, is traditionally believed to be the offspring of a drawing by Raphael, but in recent times the hypothesis that it derives from an invention by Giulio Romano has been supported.
