This hitherto unpublished painting, recently discovered because it had remained in a private collection for decades, is one of a small series of portraits and self-portraits that the artist produced between 1908 and 1910, including portraits of Clara d'Ellébeuse, Jean Royère, André Salmon, Max Jacob and the two oil paintings Apollinaire et ses amis, featuring Guillaume Apollinaire, Pablo Picasso, Marie Laurencin, Fernande Olivier and Gertrude Stein.
