Robert Rauschenberg (1925 Port Arthur/Texas - Captiva Island/Florida 2008) - Untitled (Untitled IV).
Mixed media, pencil, acrylic and collage with paper bags on firm wove paper. (19)74. Approx. 93 x 59.5 cm. Signed and dated lower right.
Untitled (IV) from 1974 shows Robert Rauschenberg's interest in the aesthetic qualities of everyday materials. The almost monochromatic color scheme recalls his revolutionary, minimalist White Paintings series of 1951. After Rauschenberg moved his primary residence and workspace from New York to Captiva, Florida, in 1971, exchanging the hustle and bustle of the city for a quieter environment, he experimented with ubiquitous materials such as cardboard boxes and paper bags. Although "Untitled (IV)" is not assigned to a specific series of works, the work shares characteristics with Rauschenberg's "Egyptian series", which was created the previous year.
