- Förg is one of the most versatile representatives of contemporary art - composition from the style-defining group of "Gitterbilder" - synthesis of architectural photography and organic pictorial structure In addition to painting, Günther Förg also works intensively with photography. In his exploration of this medium, Förg found his style-defining "Gitterbilder" (grid pictures), which were created from the 1990s onwards. Based on his architectural photography in black and white, in these compositions he explores the phenomenon of spatiality with clear grids and simple geometric forms. The gestural execution of the grids is characteristic; they are not strictly placed as in Piet Mondrian's work, for example, but are assembled by Förg from seemingly rapid brushstrokes. In their depth effect, the idea of architectural staggering remains alive. However, the use of watercolor and pastel colors lends the surface much more the appearance of an organically grown structure. It seems as if the grid is floating above the painting ground.
