SOUMAK carpet (Caucasus-Shirvan), late 19th century Dimensions: 340 x 237cm. Technical features: Wool velvet on wool foundation. A brick field highlighted with trophies, sown with florets, diamonds and entomological shapes hosts three large crenellated, hooked, cross-embellished and vegetalized rhombic marine medallions. The octagonal brick hearts feature polychrome starry flowers. The decoration is enriched by eight hooked navy octagons of the same type, as well as multicolored stylized pyramid shapes (Caucasian Kindjals). Two navy counter-borders, with a series of brick star-shaped flowers, frame the main anthracite border, with polychrome Kotchaks set on a navy and brick serrated line. Outer braid called "houndstooth". Beautiful Caucasian ensemble.
