SOUMAK carpet (Caucasus-Shirvan), early 20th century Dimensions: 315 x 230cm. Technical features: Wool velvet on wool foundation. A central fuchsia field supports three sky-blue, crenellated lozenge medallions with florets, crosses and reddish octagonal hearts, adorned with multicolored star flowers. They are interspersed with bluish octagons of the same design, as well as pyramidal shapes with hooks and floral stems reminiscent of Caucasian Kindjals daggers. The sides of the field are composed of medallions, floral compositions and polychrome arrow shapes. Two small sky and brick counter-borders with garlands of florets enclose the main anthracite border with a succession of crenellated octagonal medallions adorned with crosses pattées and stylized trees of life, as well as serrated chevrons. Brick and anthracite "hounds" border. A pleasant set.
