Thomas ERPENIUS and Joseph SCALIGER. Proverbiorum arabicorum Centuriæ duæ Leiden, Johannem Maire, 1623. In-8, cream vellum (contemporary binding).
Brunet, II-1050 /// (8f.)-134-(1f.).
Expanded second edition of this collection of Arabic proverbs, printed in Arabic characters and annotated by Thomas Erpenius and Joseph Scaliger. The first appeared in Leiden in 1614.
Thomas Van Erpenius, the famous Dutch Orientalist (1584-1624), was the father of the school of Orientalists who distinguished Holland in the 17th century. It was to him that we owe the establishment of an Arabic printing house in Leiden, which enabled the printing of Arabic, Hebrew, Chaldean and Syriac grammars.
