French school circa 1680, entourage of Charles Le BRUN
Portrait of Louis XIV, in cuirass and lavaliere.
Oval canvas
Carved and gilded wood frame with oak leaf, 17th century French work.
Height : 67 cm
Width: 54 cm
Old restorations
This composition may be an interpretation of the lost portrait of the King by Charles Le Brun circa 1680,
engraved by Antoine Masson.
A portrait similar to ours, but in front of a curtain and a landscape, belongs to the Musée National du Château de Versailles.
de Versailles, on deposit at the Musée Hisrotique in Strasbourg (inv.MV3497). A rectangular version was purchased
by the Musée National du Château de Versailles in 2019. Its attribution to Pierre Rabon (1619-1684) is
debated.
