SPAIN. - Collection of 4 manuscript pieces, 2 of which are bound in a small folio volume, brown calf, smooth spine filleted in black with gilt fleurons, double framed in black with vegetal frieze between fillets punctuated by profiles in medallions, inner black diamond of geometric frieze, scattered gilt motifs including fleurons, fleurs-de-lis, and in the center a dove with a branch; binding rubbed with worm work and worn corners (period binding). Documents recognizing the status of member of the lesser nobility (infanzón) to Bernardino Minuarts, who was "familiar of the Holy Office", i.e. officer in charge of arresting those pursued by the Inquisition. Born into a Catalan family from Sant-Celoni, northeast of Barcelona, he lived successively in Zaragoza and Valencia. In each of the latter two kingdoms (Aragon and Valencia), he had to prove his nobility in order to obtain tax privileges. - URBINA (Diego de). Signed as King of Arms of Philip III, in Spanish. Madrid, November 15, 1602. Deed certifying the nobility and describing the coat of arms of Bernardino Minuarts. COLOR PAINTED ILLUSTRATION: heraldic representation (one bifeuillet, flyleaf, armorial seal under paper; with period apostille). - COLONNA (Ascanio). Signed document as Viceroy of Aragon, in Latin and Spanish. Saragossa, January 11, 1605. Cedula in recognition of nobility. Cardinal Ascanio Colonna is the dedicatee of Cervantes' Galatea. COLOR PAINTED ILLUSTRATION, including: a full-page heraldic representation, and two illuminated initials on the first page of the text, where several words have also been enhanced with gilded paint (12 parchment ff., bound, with a green silk serpente protecting the facing paintings; with several old apostilles and signatures). - PHILIPPE III. Signed document (secretary), in Latin and Spanish. Madrid, July 1, 1614. Cédule in recognition of nobility (13 ff. parchment, bound). - PHILIPPE IV. Signed document (secretary), in Latin. Valence, April 21, 1632. Cédule en reconnaissance de noblesse (4 ff., loose; with several old apostilles). ORNAMENTATION DRAWN IN FONT AND INK, i.e. an ornate frame on 6 pages, the first one more richly decorated with the king's name. ATTACHED: - PHILIPPE IV. Signed (secretary), in Spanish. Valencia, November 21, 1645. Schedule granted to Bernardino and Isidoro Minuarts, descendants of the above-mentioned Bernardino, recognizing their status as nobles and their right to the associated privileges in the military field (one f. in-folio of paper, seal under paper). - An early handwritten note in Spanish. Coat of arms of several families, including that of Minuarts.
