Édouard Detaille (1848/1912)
"Le renseignement", First-Empire scene, the staff of a cuirassiers regiment requesting information from an inhabitant, in front of his farm; on the right, sheltered under trees, a trumpeter and cuirassiers near their horses. Oil on canvas signed lower right and dated: "1895"; rare, unusual signature, a little lighter (perhaps worn), without guarantee; gilded frame; 74 x 61.5 cm. (Some restorations; faded; small accidents to the frame).
Late 19th century. Good condition.
This painting is of fine quality, perhaps a study, signed later? The signature is very close to that on the painting: "Haut les têtes! Machine-gun fire is not shit! It depicts Colonel LEPIC at Eylau, February 8, 1807; presented at the
Salon of 1893. Musée Condé, Château de Chantilly.
