Grey limestone head of a saint, carved in the round.
Upper Rhine, circa 1300
H. 21 cm
(a few accidents and fillings)
Plinth
This handsome, smiling figure catches the eye, particularly with its hairstyle featuring wisps of hair running up the sides, forming a snail-like curl at the end. The Saint Martin from the collegiate church of Saint-Martin in Colmar (inv. SP401) (fig. a) and the figure of the Tempter from Strasbourg Cathedral (fig. b) can be compared with our sculpture to understand the interplay of influences in Alsace in the early 14th century.
