HERMES Paris, Special Edition, year 1998. Royal Gift' square Collection of Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. The Cooper Hewitt Museum was founded in 1896 on the initiative of the 3 granddaughters of Peter Cooper, American industrialist, inventor and philanthropist. The museum, located in New York, Manhattan, was free when it opened to the public in 1897, and housed the Cooper-Hewitt collections of decorative and design objects. Faced with financial demands, the museum closed in 1963. Following public protests against the closure, an agreement was reached to reopen the museum in 1968. Thus, the Cooper-Hewitt collections were welcomed by the Smithsonian Institution, which had become the owner. The Smithsonian Institution, located in Washington DC, is the world's largest complex of museums and research centers. In 1994, the museum was renamed the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
