[GISBERT (Bl.)]. La Philosophie du prince, ou la vraie idée de la nouvelle & de l'ancienne philosophie dedicated to Monseigneur le duc de Bourgogne. Paris, Cl. Thiboust, 1689, in-12, red morocco, gilded fillets around the boards, fleur-de-lys in the corners, arms in the center, spine decorated with a fleur-de-lys repeated several times, gilded edges (period binding). Collation: frontispiece, 1 title page, 20 pp. (Epistle, Warning, Table), 461 pp. c. 1-461, 2 pp. n. c. ("Extrait du privilège..."). ORIGINAL EDITION, dedicated to the Duke of Burgundy. It was written by Father J. Galimard (1637-1694). We know little about Blaise Gisbert; he was born in Cahors in 1657, and entered the Society in 1672. He taught humanities and rhetoric. He retired to Montpellier for the rest of his life. His best-known text is Le Bon Goût de l'éloquence chrétienne. Engraved frontispiece, 5 chapter headings and 5 culs-de-lampe. The chapter headings are signed J. Boudan. A dedication copy bearing the arms of the Duke of Burgundy (1682-1712), grandson of Louis XIV. In his epistle to the Duke, the author refers to his youth. The volume shows some dampstaining, one of which has affected the boards. Paper loss on pp. 77-78 with loss of letters. Dimensions: 155 x 90 mm. Provenances: Duke of Burgundy; handwritten bookplate Aygon Joyolensy. Sommervogel, III, 1461-1462; Cioranescu (A.), II, p. 977; Olivier, pl. 2510
