At the beginning of the 20th century, Louis Cartier (1875 - 1942) took the helm of Creation and encouraged new inspirations, notably from his collection of oriental art. The numerous trips to Asia by Jacques, the youngest of the Cartier brothers, also influenced the shapes and materials used.
New colored stones adorned Cartier's Art Deco jewelry. Designs from this period incorporated Asian art elements such as Bi discs, ornamental elements or engraved jade plates. Jade is a material patiently worked by craftsmen who are the guardians of an age-old art.
By employing this delicate material in creations dedicated to the French and European markets, Cartier has achieved an elegant marriage between two skills of excellence.
