[COSTUMES]. [LA MÉSANGÈRE (P. de)]. OBSERVATIONS SUR LES MODES ET LES USAGES DE PARIS, pour servir d'explication aux 115 caricatures publiés sous le titre de Bon Genre, depuis le début du dix-neuvième siècle. P., Chez l'Éditeur [Pierre de La Mésangère], boulevard Montmartre, 1827. Large in-folio ½ red polished chevrette with small corners, smooth spine decorated throughout with gilt palmettes in gilt fillet frames, gilt title (Binding of the period); (2) ff. of faux-titre and title, 24 pages, 115 pl. Some rare stains and freckling, light rubbing to binding. THIRD EDITION of this VERY RARE and "ADMIRABLE RECUEIL, UN DES PLUS BEAUX DE SON ÉPOQUE, d'une grande rareté à toutes marges" (Carteret). Like that of 1822, it is enlarged by 11 new plates compared to the first edition of 1817. 115 copper-engraved laid plates by Gatine and Schencker, carefully colored in watercolor. The main artists who contributed to the work are Carle Vernet, Bosio, Lanté, Dutailly, etc. In this copy, plate no. 39 is the first edition (1817) and bears the title Les Titus et les Cache-Folie. A fine copy, well bound and with good margins (main body 208 X 405 mm), COMPLETE with all plates, fresh and in beautiful period colors. ¶ Colas, 2240 - Vicaire, I-842 - Carteret, III-99: "All editions of this collection are rare" - Lacombe, Bibliographie parisienne, 592: "This interesting collection is sufficiently famous for me not to insist on its iconographic importance. In its complete state, it is very rare in beautiful proofs".
