THEODORE JACQUES RALLI (1852-1909) L'INDISCRÈTE, MEGARA (GREECE) EAVESDROPPING, MEGARA (GREECE) Oil on canvas, signed lower left. 46 X 32.5 CM (18 1/8 X 12 13/16 IN.) NOTE This painting, marked "HC" on the frame (for "hors-concours"), was exhibited at the 1900 Salon (organized by the Association des Artistes Français, of which Ralli was a member) under number 1096 and the title "L'Indiscrète". Théodore Ralli was a pupil of Gérôme, Lecomte du Nouy and the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. He received an honorable mention in 1885, a silver medal in 1889 for the Exposition Universelle and was a member of the jury hors-concours for the 1900 Exposition Universelle. He also exhibited at London's Royal Academy from 1879. He was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1901. Ralli traveled throughout the Middle East and North Africa, bringing back many sources of inspiration. He painted few pictures of Algeria, one of which, "Enseignement religieux dans une mosquée d'Alger", is now in the Sydney Museum.
