Beautifully crafted Apouema mask with a large arched nose above a mouth with a large smile showing its teeth. Hard wood, blackened with bancoul nuts and lime, with a beautiful dark patina (chips, cracks and wear). Height: 36 cm, depth: 11 cm, width: 15.5 cm. The Apouema mask, a powerful symbol of the Kanak chief's authority, is presented to him on his accession to power. Worn during major events, it is also closely associated with the chief's mourning. Melanesia. New Caledonia. Kanak people. Old label "Masque de Calédonie". Provenance: an old family of notables from the Var region.
