Beautifully crafted Apouema mask with a large arched nose above a mouth with a large smile showing its teeth.
Hard wood, blackened with bancoul nuts and lime, with a beautiful dark patina (chips, cracks and wear). Height: 36 cm, depth: 11 cm, width: 15.5 cm.
The Apouema mask, a powerful symbol of the Kanak chief's authority, is presented to him on his accession to power. Worn during major events, it is also closely associated with the chief's mourning.
