Anatole FRANCE. Farinata degli Uberti or the Civil War. No place or date [ca. April 1896]. Autograph manuscript signed small in-4 with (1) title page and 27 leaves mounted on tabs: lavaliered morocco, four-ribbed spine, gilt fleur-de-lys mosaic in red morocco in the corner of the upper cover, interior framing in lavaliered morocco decorated with two gilt fillets, bronze and black brocaded silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges (Marius Michel). Beautiful complete autograph manuscript of this tale, first published in Le Temps on April 29, 1896, then included in the Clio collection (1900). Extensively reworked by the author, it features over eighty autograph erasures and corrections; five leaves in the final section feature passages cut out and mounted with glue. Anatole France's tale features a dialogue between Farinata degli Uberti, a 12th-century Florentine faction leader, and the painter Fra Angelico. The manuscript includes an excerpt from Canto 10 of Dante's Inferno in Italian, dedicated to Farinata degli Uberti, which does not appear in the published version. Perfectly set in lavaliere morocco by Marius Michel for Louis Barthou, with bookplate (catalog III, 1936, no. 1704).
