The Tsar was unable to reply to the letter of July 26 (doubtless telling him of Napoleon's death, which was only then known in Europe). Alexandrevoue à Eugène "un trop sincère attachement pour ne pas ressentir une vive peine de son affliction [...] Le vœu dont Votre Altesse Royale m'entretient [...] honore Ses sentimens, et il seroit impossible de ne pas trouver y une nouvelle preuve des qualités de Son cœur. It seems to me, however, that on this occasion affections, however lively they may be [...] should yield to the calculations of that prudence which has always marked Your Royal Highness's conduct. I therefore believe that in all respects it would be preferable for her to renounce her desire. In the times in which we live, malevolence is so active, its interpretations so perfidious and so false, that one cannot take too much care to abstain from any step which it could take hold of"...
