Jules Vieillard & Cie

Price on request

Exceptional Japanese tea service by Manufacture Jules Vieillard & Cie. Extremely rare, this magnificent service features twenty-seven fine earthenware pieces decorated with polychrome enamels on a green ground sprinkled with gold. It comprises a teapot, a milk jug, a sugar bowl and twelve cups accompanied by their plates. This exceptional work is attributed to Amédée de Caranza, a prestigious collaborator of the Vieillard et Cie factory in Bordeaux between 1878 and 1886. Born in Constantinople and the son of a ceramist, Caranza had a detailed knowledge of the art of ceramics and was constantly seeking to perfect new processes. An eminent exponent of Japonism, Caranza was fascinated by Hokusai's masterpieces, particularly the "Manga". Here, he draws his inspiration from the postures of Hokusai's characters to depict animals and fantastical creatures. Caranza pays tribute to the master of Japanese printmaking by quoting his signature and the ideogram at the end of the word "manga". The use of gold powder is characteristic of Caranza's contribution to the activities of the Vieillard factory, where he was a brilliant workshop manager.
