Our painting is a reworking of the signed painting in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Strasbourg. It is probable that this first work was successful enough for ecclesiastics to commission other copies. One of these is in a private Italian collection. The Strasbourg picture, which blends Caravaggesque realism with the more classicizing sentiments inspired by Guido Reni, was probably painted during the painter's transition from Naples to Rome.
Provenance: Galerie MARES COLCHI in Bologna (Italy) bought around 1850 by Marquis Hippolyte Le Gouvello de Keriaval; then by descent from the d'Aboville family, Château de Rouville (Malesherbes, Loiret).
