FLORENTINE CASE c. 1700, AFTER Balthasar FRANCESCHINI (1611-1689), known as IL VOLTERRANO
Saint Catherine of Siena
Canvas.
On the back, a label with the letter B.
94.5 x 117.5 cm.
This painting is a variant of the Saint Catherine in the Dulwich Museum, now donated to Volterrano at the suggestion of Federico Zeri, after having been attributed to Andrea Sacchi. While there are several poor-quality copies of this composition (one in the Musée de Grenoble), our version is the only one to feature an angel next to the Saint.
