Leonardo LIMOSIN and workshop (Circa 1505-1575) Two sibyls Polychrome enamel plates on copper, Limoges circa 1540. H. 13 cm - W. 12.5 cm Provenance : Collection of Monsieur and Madame A., in their Hôtel particulier near the Champs-Élysées ; By descent to the current owner. Two square plaques on diamond-shaped points, one showing a Persian sibyl holding a lantern, the other an Eritrean sibyl, named here "RICHEA", holding a rose. Both are depicted mid-body in a medallion encircled by foliage, the counter-glaze in light fondant for the Persian sibyl, in midnight blue for the Eritrean sibyl. Léonard Limosin and his workshop produced a number of representations of sibyls, often associated with Old Testament prophets and apostles; some, as here, in medallions in a square plate, sometimes oriented in a diamond shape. Most of them are now in public collections: Musée National de la Renaissance d'Ecouen, Vatican Museums, Metropolitan Museum, New York, Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, British Museum...
