Cast and chased bronze plaque with black patina depicting the Lamentation at the feet of the Cross; inscribed on the back Benedetto da Maiano 1480 (repatinated).
Early 19th century
H. 21.7 cm - L. 28.4 cm
This plate was inspired by a drawing by Jan Van Der Straet ( Bruges 1523 - Florence 1605) engraved by Raphaël Sadeler ( Antwerp 1560 - Munich ? 1632), which provides a highly original depiction of the dead Christ seen obliquely from above. Numerous examples from the 17th century are known today and are preserved in renowned institutions, including Roman workshops. What's more, this plate was a great success, and orders were placed well into the 19th century.
