Cast and chased bronze plaque with black patina depicting the Lamentation at the feet of the Cross; inscribed on the back Benedetto da Maiano 1480 (repatinated). Early 19th century H. 21.7 cm - L. 28.4 cm This plate was inspired by a drawing by Jan Van Der Straet ( Bruges 1523 - Florence 1605) engraved by Raphaël Sadeler ( Antwerp 1560 - Munich ? 1632), which provides a highly original depiction of the dead Christ seen obliquely from above. Numerous examples from the 17th century are known today and are preserved in renowned institutions, including Roman workshops.
