Allegory of Charity " Magnificent high relief in polychrome carved wood enhanced with gold. Superb carving work for this high relief representing the 17th century Allegory of Charity. The Virgin, dressed in a long red and gold dress, offers her breast to the child. The idea of charity is traditionally represented by a young woman surrounded by many young children, one or two of whom she is breastfeeding. There is no other attribute than the generously offered breast.
